There are several techniques for cooling an engine but only one is used for modern engines. Let us quote in spite of everything the others which exist history to know a little more.

You will of dmods course have guessed that the system currently used is liquid cooling, ie water cooling. However, there is also air cooling which is technically much simpler but obviously much less efficient than liquid cooling (Porsche enthusiasts, however, favor old air-cooled engines. But that does not seem to have anything to do with a question of efficiency!). This system will also be found more on motorcycles than on cars.

You should also know that oil cooling also exists on some engines in conjunction with water cooling.

Regarding liquid cooling, there was a time when it was not necessary to have a water pump to circulate the water in the circuits. The simple difference in temperature (which generates energy) between very hot water and water that is less hot was enough to circulate the water.

The water has come to temperature, so you have to start cooling it if you don't want the cylinder head gasket to overheat ... The Thermostat then "moves" to block part of the "small circuit" and connect it to the large circuit that cools the water via the radiator.
